How Close Can a Pallet Rack Be to an Exit Door?
When planning a warehouse layout, a common question is: how close can a pallet rack be to an exit door?
There is not one universal OSHA rule that says pallet racking must remain a specific number of inches or feet from an exit door. Instead, the rack placement must allow the required means of egress to remain clear, accessible and unobstructed.
OSHA requires exit access to be at least 28 inches wide at all points, although building codes, fire codes, occupancy requirements and local authorities may require a wider path. 44 inches of clearance is preferred for aisles leading to emergency exits.
It is always best to verify plans with a professional. Each circumstance is unique and will require individual evaluation.
What Should You Consider When Placing Pallet Racks Near an Exit?
Before installing pallet racks near an exit door, consider whether the rack could:
- Reduce the required width of the exit route
- Interfere with the door’s full swing
- Block access to the exit
- Make the exit difficult to see or reach
- Create an obstruction when pallets are loaded
- Conflict with local building or fire-code requirements
It is important to evaluate the loaded rack, not just the rack frame. Pallets, cartons or other stored materials should not project into the required exit path.
Is There a Minimum Pallet Rack Clearance From an Exit Door?
The required clearance depends on the building, occupancy, exit configuration and applicable codes. OSHA establishes minimum requirements for exit routes, but state and local building or fire codes may impose additional requirements.
For that reason, pallet rack layouts near exit doors should be reviewed before installation rather than relying on a single universal clearance measurement.
